College to BSW: How to Turn Your Diploma into a Bachelor of Social Work in Canada

College to University Transfer Pathways (Social Work)

Can your college diploma make obtaining a Bachelor of Social Work easier? Absolutely! Several Canadian universities have college-to-university transfer pathways, making it possible for graduates of programs like Social Service Work (SSW), Child and Youth Worker (CYW), Police Foundations, and other human services diplomas to earn a BSW with significant transfer credit. In fact, some pathways can reduce the BSW to as little as two years after transfer credit is applied.

In this guide, we’ll break down the major college-to-BSW pathways by diploma type, online BSW programs accessible from anywhere in Canada, and other creative options for students who need to bridge the gap.

How College-to-BSW Pathways Work

A college-to-BSW pathway is a formal agreement between a college and a university that lets diploma graduates enter a Bachelor of Social Work program with transfer credit, allowing you to skip courses that overlap with what you’ve already learned. Depending on your diploma and the receiving university’s requirements, you might enter at Year 2 or even Year 3 of the BSW, saving you one to two years of study.

These pathways go by different names, such as articulation agreements, block transfer agreements, or 2 + 2 agreements, but they all work on the same principle – your college education counts toward your BSW degree. Some agreements are multilateral, allowing diplomas from multiple colleges to qualify. Others are bilateral, based on specific partnerships between a single college and university. In other cases, schools assess applicants on a case-by-case basis by evaluating individual credits.

Curious what’s available for your specific diploma? Let’s break it down.

Note: This list is not exhaustive – if you don’t see your desired school, diploma, or province listed, contact the admissions office of any BSW program that interests you for more information about what’s possible.

If You Have a Child and Youth Worker (CYW) Diploma

CYW graduates have some of the broadest college-to-BSW transfer options available to them. Here are the major CYW-to-BSW pathways:

  • University of Windsor (Windsor, ON) accepts CYW advanced diploma graduates from Ontario colleges. CYW grads enter directly into Year 3 of the Honours BSW, meaning you’ll earn a degree in roughly two years.

  • Wilfrid Laurier University (Brantford, ON) offers a multilateral block transfer agreement, meaning CYW advanced diploma graduates from any public Ontario college can apply to the BSW program.

  • Toronto Metropolitan University (Toronto, ON) accepts CYW graduates into its BSW through a part-time Advanced Standing stream with entry to Year 3. This route requires a minimum 73% GPA plus at least two years of paid, full-time equivalent work experience in social services. CYW graduates without that work experience should look into TMU’s full-time Second Year Entry option.

  • York University (Toronto, ON) accepts CYW graduates into its College/University BSW stream with transfer credits assessed individually. Applicants typically enter at the second-year level.

  • Algoma University (Sault Ste. Marie, Brampton, & Timmins, ON) encourages college graduates from all disciplines, including CYW, to apply to its BSW program. Algoma offers up to 60 transfer credits for diploma holders and may reduce the mandatory 700-hour field practicum for applicants with a diploma or relevant work experience.

  • Lakehead University (Thunder Bay, ON) accepts applications from CYW diploma holders into its Honours BSW with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

  • Douglas College (Metro Vancouver, BC) offers its own BSW and accepts applications from students with a Child and Youth Care diploma.

If You Have a Social Service Worker (SSW) Diploma

SSW graduates have an equally strong set of options. Many of the same universities that accept CYW diplomas also welcome SSW holders, and in some cases, SSW grads benefit from dedicated 2+2 agreements that grant even more transfer credits.

If You Have a Police Foundations Diploma

It may come as a surprise, but a Police Foundations diploma can also be a stepping stone to a BSW. The University of Windsor (Windsor, ON) accepts graduates of two-year Police Foundations programs, including those from St. Clair College and Lambton College, with a cumulative average of B or better. Successful applicants receive up to one year (10 courses) of credit toward the BSW degree, with six semesters remaining.

No other universities currently list a formal Police Foundations-to-BSW pathway, but it’s worth contacting any BSW program you're interested in to see if some of your credits would transfer.

Other Human Services Diplomas That Can Lead to a BSW

Several other college diplomas also provide pathways to accelerated BSW programs:

Online BSW Program Options Across Canada

What if you can’t relocate and there are no on-campus BSW programs nearby? Several Canadian universities now offer accredited BSW programs online, accessible from anywhere in the country.

  • University of Calgary offers a fully online, two-year BSW designed for students who already hold an Alberta social work diploma, a degree in another field, or two years of university education.

  • University of Victoria offers a flexible online BSW that can be completed full-time or part-time. The program provides clear guidance for SSW diploma holders looking to transfer in, noting that approximately six additional university courses may be required for admission. Once admitted, the BSW can typically be completed in approximately two years of full-time study.

  • University of Manitoba offers a distance delivery BSW that can be completed in about three years of full-time online study.

  • Dalhousie University offers an asynchronous online BSW, but it requires 10 university-level courses for admission and does not consider college diploma credits toward that requirement. This option works best for students who have already accumulated some university credit through other means.

How to Research Your Options

The best starting point depends on where you are located and where you want to go to obtain your BSW:

If you’re looking to transfer across provincial lines – e.g., from an Ontario college to a BC university – there is no single national database that covers everything. Your best bet is to contact the admissions office of the university you’re interested in directly. Many will do an individual transcript assessment and tell you how many credits you’d receive.

The same applies if you’re located in a province that doesn’t have formal pathway agreements, or if a school you’re interested in isn’t included in this guide. Visit the university’s BSW admissions page, email their admissions advisor, and ask specifically about diploma-to-BSW options and credit assessments.

Don’t Have Enough Credits?

If your diploma doesn’t transfer directly into a BSW, or if a BSW program requires more university credits than you currently have, diploma-to-degree completion programs can bridge the gap. These programs accept college diploma holders and grant a bachelor’s degree (usually a BA), which can then qualify you for BSW or even MSW admission.

Notable options include the University of Waterloo’s (Waterloo, ON) BA in Social Development Studies, Toronto Metropolitan University’s (Toronto, ON) BA in Disability Studies, the University of Guelph-Humber’s Honours Bachelor of Applied Science in Social Services & Well-Being Studies, and Ontario Tech University’s BA in Educational Studies. Some can even be completed online and part-time, making them practical for working professionals.

Individual university courses taken through open studies programs, such as those at the University of Guelph or Athabasca University, can also help you meet specific prerequisite requirements for BSW programs. Many universities offer open studies, and often courses can be completed online through distance education.

Your Diploma Is Just the Beginning

If there’s one key takeaway from this guide, it’s that a college diploma can give you a head start. Whether you’re just starting your diploma, partway through, or you graduated years ago and are ready for the next step, there are paths to a BSW available to you.

Research your options using the tools and websites above, and don’t be afraid to pick up the phone and call an admissions office or send them an email – a brief conversation with an admissions advisor can save you months of guesswork and uncertainty.
