Creating a Strategic MSW Application Plan (For Canadian Applicants)
When many people start thinking about applying to Master of Social Work (MSW) programs, they focus entirely on how to create the strongest application possible. This of course is important and makes sense given the competitiveness of MSW programs, but what can also increase your chances of getting accepted to a program is building an application strategy before you even begin your application.
A strong application can still lead to rejection if it is only submitted to extremely competitive programs, or if the range of schools is too limited. One of the most important steps in the application process is being strategic about where and how you apply.
This blog post will go over several key factors Canadian applicants should consider when developing their MSW application strategy.
Apply to Multiple Programs (Ideally 3–5)
One of the most common mistakes applicants make is applying to only one MSW program.
MSW programs in Canada are extremely competitive, and admission decisions are influenced by many factors beyond applicant strength, including cohort size, placement availability, and program priorities.
At MSW Helper, we have seen an overall 89% acceptance rate among applicants we support. The majority of applicants who were not accepted applied to only one school.
Applying to 3–5 programs significantly increases the likelihood of receiving an offer. It also provides options if multiple schools accept you, allowing you to choose the program that best fits your goals. You may have a dream school in mind, but if you are open to attending another program, applying to multiple schools is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of not being accepted. Limiting yourself to just one application can significantly lower your chances of getting into an MSW program, so it is important to be mindful of that trade-off if only one school feels like an option.
We also do not recommend applying to more than five schools in one application cycle, as this decreases the amount of time you have to spend on each of your applications. Your current commitments in life (work, caregiving, etc.) also impact the amount of time you can spend on your applications and may influence the number of schools you choose to apply to. Although it is beneficial to apply to multiple schools, it is always better to have fewer stronger applications than to have multiple applications that are not as strong or not considered competitive by application committees. Reviewing your current obligations and the time you have to commit to each application can be helpful prior to starting your applications.
Popular MSW Programs in Canada
Understand the Competitiveness of Online vs. In-Person Programs
Many Canadian applicants assume that online MSW programs will be easier to get into because they appear more flexible or accessible. In reality, the opposite is often true.
Online MSW programs in Canada frequently receive a much larger number of applications, particularly from:
working professionals
parents and caregivers
applicants who cannot relocate
applicants applying across multiple provinces
Because of this demand, online programs are often more competitive than in-person programs.
Applicants who are open to relocating for an in-person program may significantly expand their chances of admission.
This is also why applying to 3-5 programs can increase your chances of getting accepted if you are limited to online programs in Canada.
Consider Alternative Pathways
For some applicants, the most strategic path to becoming a social worker may not be a direct MSW.
Post-Degree BSW Programs
If you do not have a Bachelor of Social Work degree, post-degree BSW programs can be an excellent option. These programs typically take 1–2 years and can allow you to later apply to advanced standing MSW programs, which are shorter. This is a great option if you are making the switch to social work after completing an undergrad degree in another field.
This pathway can sometimes be more accessible than entering a regular two-year MSW program immediately because it breaks the process into two steps rather than one highly competitive leap. Direct-entry MSW programs often have limited seats and attract a large pool of applicants from diverse academic backgrounds, which can make admission especially competitive. By completing a BSW first, you strengthen your application, demonstrate clear commitment to the profession, and become eligible for advanced standing MSW programs.
Counselling Psychology Programs
Some applicants are primarily interested in therapy or clinical work only, rather than a career that encompasses more community-level or macro-level work.
In these cases, it can be helpful to ask yourself if social work is the best fit for your career goals. Social work is one pathway you can take if you have the goal of working clinically, but there are other fields that may also be worth exploring, such as counselling psychology. Thinking about your career goals prior to starting the application process can help you to decide if you want to only apply to social work programs, or if applying to other related programs as well would help you to achieve the same career goals. This is also a great way to increase your chances of being accepted into a graduate program.
At MSW Helper, we often work with applicants applying to both MSW programs and counselling programs. For example, we provide application support for Yorkville University, one of the major counselling psychology programs available to Canadian students. In addition, Yorkville University offers a $750 tuition credit and $150 application fee waiver towards their Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology program to members of the MSW Helper community. When creating your application strategy, it can be beneficial to research what various schools and programs can offer, including tuition support.
Exploring multiple professional pathways can help ensure you choose the program that best aligns with your long-term goals.

Consider U.S. MSW Programs
Many Canadian applicants focus exclusively on Canadian schools, but U.S.-based MSW programs can be a great option if you are willing to either relocate or attend an online program.
If a program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), it is generally recognized in Canada and graduates can typically register as a social worker in their home province.
Pros of U.S. MSW Programs
More program options
Often less competitive admissions
Greater flexibility in specialization and format
Cons of U.S. MSW Programs
Higher tuition costs
International logistics and planning
Some universities offer in-state tuition rates for Canadian students (e.g. Wayne State University), which can significantly reduce costs. For some applicants, applying to a few U.S. programs alongside Canadian schools can significantly increase admission opportunities.
Look Beyond Prestige When Choosing Programs
It is normal to focus on the most well-known universities when applying to graduate school. However, prestige is not the only factor that should guide your decision. Typically, when applying to jobs post-MSW, employers do not care where you got your MSW degree from, they just care that you have it and consider the placement experiences you had in the program.
When selecting MSW programs, consider:
Field placement opportunities
Areas of specialization
Faculty research interests
Program values and approach to social work
Location and community partnerships
Financial considerations
Flexibility for work or family commitments
A program that aligns with your career goals, learning style, and personal circumstances may ultimately be a better fit than a more prestigious institution. It can also increase your chances of getting accepted into a program if you apply to some of the less competitive programs. Before beginning your application, I recommend doing your research into a variety of programs to see which is the best fit and can meet your needs. Our MSW Helper blog has reviews of several MSW programs in Canada and the U.S., which may be a good place to start.
Final Thoughts
Applying to MSW programs is not only about creating a compelling application, but also about building a strategic application strategy. Strong applicants sometimes receive rejections simply because they limited their options or focused only on the most competitive programs. By applying to multiple schools, considering different program formats, exploring alternative pathways, and expanding your search beyond Canada, you can significantly increase your chances of success. If you are planning to apply to MSW programs and want support developing your application strategy, MSW Helper provides individualized guidance for applicants navigating the admissions process.
